Can I please ask:-

1. What is your brother’s background? Has he finished his bachelor degree? what kind of degree has he finished and what is his interest?

2. Does he want to do an Engineering degree? a Science, A Medicine, a Business or a Law degree?

3. Does he want to do a doctorate? A doctorate is the highest degree a university can award.

4. Why does he want to go back to university and study?

5. After finished his study, does he want to go back to Taiwan or stay at Australia? Or work/study at another country?



He should be gainfully working at the age of 27. Stop working at this age and goes back to study is very costly. He should deserve get the most of his money and time invested in this study process.



There are lots of different postgraduate degrees offered by Australian Universities. Only 3 are recognized by Taiwanese government. They are:- Master’s by COURSEWORK (碩士學位學分班), Master’s by RESEARCH (碩士學位研究班), Doctorate (博士學位).



碩士學位學分班 takes shorter time to complete (normally 1 1/2 - 2 years). Your chance to finish it is high. If you want to work in industry after your study, you are recommended to do it. Some of my friends only finished專科 and get accepted into 莫爾本大學會計碩士學位學分班. I believe莫爾本大學會計碩士學位學分班 are trying to take as many students as possible.



碩士學位研究班 takes longer (2 -2- 1/2 years). Do this if and only if you want to do博士學位 after your 碩士學位.



博士學位 is the longest (3-5 years). Some of my friends are fighting in their 10th year. Very few students can sustain such a prolonged stress so that the drop out rate (休/退學率) is as high as 50%. You are recommended to do it if and only if you want to be a researcher/professor.



Mara was doing a Ph.D. (博士學位). This is my 3rd year in the course and I published some Journal and conferences papers (1 Journal and 6 conferences papers). However, My supervisor thinks I am NOT capable of awarding a PhD so that he forces me to submit my Thesis as a Master’s Thesis (碩士論文), suspend my scholarship and resigned as my supervisor. I am not alone. Some other students are like so. I am sure you do not want to waste your time like this.





By the way, if your brother wants to type Chinese character here, bring a Chinese Keyboard.此間無中文鍵盤 ㄅㄆㄇㄈ也忘的差不多了 所以中打慢 每分鐘只有1–2 字 有時便打英文 敬請見諒

You need to prepare Living expenses + tuition fee. Mara is very Very VERY STINGY but still need to spend around NT$300-350K a year for LIVING here at Melbourne. The living expense should be slightly higher at Sydney.

Australian University uses IELTS rather than托福. I never sit for IELTS or 托福 exams and I think it is not a problem. For碩士學位學分班, you are expected to be able to:

1. do oral presentation,

2. read and understand lecturer notes

3. read and understand exam questions. And more importantly, write, and let examiner understand your English writing.

Moreover, apply scholarship if your brother is a good student. Try "overseas scholarship” or “overseas student scholarship” at every Australian university. This is very Very VERY competitive scholarship, but still, someone gets that every year.
