While the middle east is known as a geographic region where freedom of speech is limited and protesting often result in chaos and arrests, the State of Israel is one of the few exceptions where people have the freedom to protest and the people are making the most of it. This past weekend, over 15,000 animal lovers in Israel put on the LARGEST animal rights protest flooding the streets of Tel Aviv, Israel.
This weekend’s protest was the largest of Israel’s kind in a country where most protests are more towards human rights and political stability. With organizers from multiple animal rights groups like Let the animals live Israel and Ban Live Export, this protest has shown the world that people in middle east are starting to see value in the life of animals as well as people and are willing to take steps to stand up for them. Looking at a sea of cards and giant banners and everyone wearing the same uniform truly shows how unified these people are.
Here at America, Canada, UK and EU, we have the freedom of demonstration but hardly any of us exercise it with our demonstrations reaching using in the hundreds tops. As most of our rallies are in the dozens, it puts us to shame when compared to these developing nations. It really show how we need to step it up and show more concerns for the animals if we want to start shaking government and companies. It is OUR country and OUR neighbours and OUR communities that are creating a market for animal cruelty importing animal trophies. While developing nations like Kenya are hosting thousand people rallies and protests to stop exports, we need to step up our game and start hosting similar thousand people rallies to stop imports on our shores.

“We woke up about animals some time ago. 7% of Israelis are vegan and loads more vegetarian. We have more vegan and vegetarian restaurants than anywhere else in the world (ratio) and you would be hard pressed to find any restaurants here that don’t offer veg and vegan meals. Our national foods are even vegan: falafel, chummus or vegetarian: sabich. We managed, with the spearheaded efforts of the largest animal freedom fighters here – to get Mazor farms – A well known breeder of monkeys who were then exported to medical testing facilities in the US to close and moved all the monkeys to a sanctuary.”
