Traveling on a vegan diet can be challenging if you’re unprepared.
But the experience can become an exciting adventure if you take some time in advance
to research your destination’s vegan food options. In many cases you’ll
discover some terrific new meals that aren’t available at home, and you’ll
return from your trip with a broader appreciation of what a vegan diet has to offer.
Depending on where you’re going, the vegan options may be plentiful
or they may seem nonexistent. But even the worst-case scenarios are rarely
unworkable, since almost every destination will have a grocery featuring fruits,
vegetables, nuts, breads, and basic staples. The more vegan-unfriendly your destination,
the more you’ll need to rely on preparing your own food. For shorter visits,
you can get by without really having to cook by relying on fruit, juices, nuts, sandwiches, and wraps.
A little time spend researching things before you arrive can pay off hugely.
Try doing a Google search for vegan and the name of the city you’ll be visiting.
Also check out VegGuide.org and HappyCow.net; they can help you pinpoint some
of the best international vegan-friendly restaurants. Also keep in mind that restaurants
are not your only food option: there are many vegan Bed and Breakfast’s
popping up around the world that can be discovered via the Internet.
If your trip is short and the location especially inhospitable to vegans,
you may want to pack some food with you. Choose calorically dense
items such as energy bars, with the goal of packing the most calories into the smallest space.
